Study Opportunities

Basic bookbinding for beginners in Leeds- This course provides an introduction to basic techniques used in traditional bookbinding. You will gain the knowledge and skills required to bind magazines / periodicals and rebind older books and to carry out minor repairs to prolong the life of a book.

You will study some materials technology, where you will be able to identify different types and kinds of materials used in bookbinding. You will also learn the various styles of bindings, being able to distinguish between adhesive bound and sewn books; full, half and quarter bound; coloured, marbled or gilt edges. You will be shown how to use tools, equipment and machinery safely and correctly and how a small bindery can be set up.

The course is mainly 'hands on' practical work with some theory included. This will enable you to compile a portfolio showing your ability, from which you can achieve a recognised certificate. Assessment of work will be carried out throughout the course.

The work you will produce is designed to progress from simple bindings to those more complex. You will make: Pamphlet style booklets, Quarter bound book, 2 different styles of case bound, hard back books

You will receive a craft certificate from a national awarding body (NCFE) on completion of the course.

There can also be the opportunity to progress to more advanced bookbinding courses.

The duration of the course is 3.5 hours per week for 18 weeks and there will be a fee of £150 on enrolment. The course will be run on Wednesday evenings starting at 5.00 pm.
